What is a Waste collection centre?
1. Characteristics

A waste collection centre is an area that is arranged, guarded and fenced where people can bring their waste voluntarily. It is a deposit area for collection, transit and orientation of wastes towards the correct recovery system: upgrading, composting, incineration or special treatment. The storage in the waste collection centre is limited to the necessities of flow regulation and economic optimisation of transportation. Sorting waste at source facilitates the direction of materials, the involvement and responsibility of users as well as the reduction of global costs of waste management at the municipal level. Indeed, the closeness of the waste collection centre is a complementary service to usual collection modes.
2. Role of a waste collection centre
The waste collection centre is designed to facilitate the circulation of recyclable wastes from its source to its corresponding recovery network. The waste collection centre is an intermediary link. Its role is to:
3. Types of waste collection centres:
Courtyard waste collection site
Situated on the street side, the courtyard waste collection site comprises
several specific containers clearly defined with pictogrammes. The inhabitants
can bring and deposit their sorted waste in the corresponding container. In
addition to the household waste container, there is a container for collecting
glass, plastic bottles, paper and compost. This site is usually hidden by
a fence.
Municipal waste collection centre
A
municipal waste collection centre is a fenced and guarded area where citizens
can bring and deposit at no cost their selected recyclable waste, i.e. no
household waste. Users sort out the waste themselves before bringing them
to the waste collection centre. The site comprises several specific containers
clearly defined with pictogrammes corresponding to the material.
Industrial waste collection centre
An industrial waste collection centre is like an open recovery yard space.
Because of the nature, volume and heterogeneity of industrial wastes, the
site has to be built with separated spaces large enough for loading and unloading
operations. The industrial waste collection centre can also be constituted
of large containers that are withdrawn by the waste collectors. The size of
this kind of collection centre depends on the expected quantities of waste
and specificities of the site.
Practical training on waste management
In the framework of the Swiss cooperation in Maghreb and West
Africa, SBA and SDC organised a week-long practical training on waste management
and recycling. It included theoretical and technical presentations, field
work and meetings with professionals in waste management.
This training took place in September 2003 and 2004. Approximately 40 recyclers,
managers, engineers and mayors were trained.
